The fourth largest city plaza in the world, La Gran Plaza is a 400,000 square meter area in Monterrey, Mexico that is a definite must see for anyone visiting the region. The plaza itself is fairly young, but there are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] several historical elements that date back hundreds of years. Each monument, building, sculpture and pedestrian zone has been carefully designed to illustrate the long and diverse cultural elements of Mexico. The nation isn't just it's history, there is a wealth of talent rising up from Mexico today, forming a whole new dimension to the country's identity.
The focal point of La Gran Plaza is Faro del Comercio or Lighthouse of Commerce, a 70 meter tall lighthouse from [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] which an ethereal green laser shines towards the sky each evening. Celebrated architect Luis Barragan designed the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] lighthouse shortly before his death in 1988. Barragan was an iconic member of the Mexican cultural movement and recognized around the world for his [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] work. His home and studio have even been included among the UNESCO World Heritage site lists.
In Mexico City there is the National Palace, still standing in its colonial form as Hernan Cortes left [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] it. In La Gran Plaza the Governor of the state of Nuevo Leon's office is in Palacio de Gobierno, a building that mirrors many of the same architectural elements as the National Palace. Huge dramatic columns mark the main entrance, topped by a six foot statue of a golden eagle. Adjacent to the Governors Palace is Capilla do los Dulces Nombres, one of the more elderly fixtures of the plaza. As a 19th century Roman Catholic chapel, it [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] bears all the usual elements one would expect of its age and station.
Deep in the heart of the plaza is a peaceful hidden garden called Jardin Hundido. There is a large marble fountain, ornamental flower beds and sculpted shrubs, but the highlight is Speaker's Corner. Here residents and politicians hold open debates and discussions, peacefully and with the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] laws of society at hand. Also within the plaza is the office of the mayor, city hall, a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] public library, and the showpiece of the park: Fuente de Neptuno. The [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] immense bronze fountain depicts the Roman god, Neptune and rivals similar features found [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in Italy and France.
Sometimes a town square is not just a town square. In Monterrey, Mexico the city plaza represents the Mexican people's talent in art, design, and architecture. However, the plaza also speaks of how progressive the government of Mexico has become, how there is a high regard for [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the voice of the people.
