When [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] my wife was pregnant with our first child, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I had plenty of friends and family trying to give me advice and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] help prepare me for what was to come, but there was simply no way for me to know what the experience was going to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] be like, until I actually went through it. I can tell you that it is nothing like you see in the movies, and there is a lot of waiting around and stress that you will have to deal with as your partner goes into labor.
The first thing that you have to do is to give yourself a pep talk, and to make a solemn vow to yourself that you are going to be strong and be a rock for your partner. You will find that as an expectant father, you're going to feel quite helpless during most of the labor process. There are a number of things that you can do for your partner, but in the end the reality is that she is the one doing all of the hard work. I can tell you that this is not an easy thing [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to watch, but you simply have to accept your role and do what you can.
Keep in mind that labor can last for quite some time, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] up to 24 hours or more. As I alluded to earlier, it isn't like the movies where you will be rushing your wife to the hospital at a moments notice and the baby will pop out instantly. Your wife will be in labor and discomfort for quite some time, and it is basically your [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] job to help try and comfort her and keep her relaxed and focused on her breathing. The most difficult part is easily when your partner [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] starts to push, and this is when she will really need your support and encouragement. You want to try and support her neck as she is pushing, to ensure that she is not straining herself more than is necessary. This process can be extremely taxing on your partner, so anything you can do to help alleviate her discomfort will be a great help.
If you are lucky your partner will not be pushing for very long, but in some instances there may be complications in the baby would all come out [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] normally. This is [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] exactly what happened to my wife and I. She was a pushing for close to three hours before the doctor decided to deliver our daughter by forceps. My wife had to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] be taken into the operating room, and this was quite an unnerving experience. This is again a possibility that you have to be prepared for, and to never let the worry show on your face, as your partner will be constantly looking to you for support.
While you may not be doing the hard part of delivering your baby, you as a father will play a large role in helping to comfort your wife and encouraging her. It may seem like it is insignificant to you, but having you there means a great deal to your partner, as just about any mother who has ever delivered a baby will tell you. Just remember that the most important thing you can do for your partners to keep your cool and be there for her.
