Building a bee hive is not what you would call rocket science, in the simplest form it is a box for your bees to live in.
Of course you do need to understand a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] bit about beekeeping and the function of the hive before you start to build a hive.
Beekeeping has been a hobby and a business world wide for hundreds of years and in that time the primary activities of beekeeping have been refined.
This is particularly true of the hive. There are many different designs of hive, but probably the most widely used is the Langstroth Hive.
The Langsthroth hive is a familiar box shape and is a relatively simple construction that has been developed over many years to make beekeeping and the harvesting of the honey much easier.
If you are new to beekeeping and you are thinking about building a hive then get a woodworking plan for a Langstroth hive.
Langstroth hives can have varying numbers of frames on which the bees build their honeycombs, usually 8 to 10, the spacing between the frames, the top, bottom and sides is critical for the best efficiency of the hive.
When Langstroth [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] constructed his hives he did so in a way that the frames the bees use to build their honeycombs were mechanically separated from all other parts of the hive. This includes the frames themselves, the walls, the floor and the cover. He determined that the most effective separation was 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).
Without the right separation the bees will basically cement the whole thing together making it very difficult to remove the honeycombs.
Let's face it if you have difficulty in removing the honeycombs it is likely you are going to make your bees angry so [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] look for a plan that has the correct mechanical separation.
The essential parts of Langstroth's hive from top down to the bottom are:-
* The Outer cover - this is usually [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] made of wood or polystyrene and fits on [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the top of the hive. In the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] north, where the cover usually telescopes down around the inner cover and an inch or so (25mm) down over the top super, it is referred to as a telescoping [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] cover. Commercial [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] beekeepers often use what is termed as a migratory cover, this is a solid cover that [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] does not extend further than the sides of a hive body.
* An Inner Cover
* The Hive Body or Honey Super ( one or more) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] - these can be made of wood, polystyrene, or other [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] plastic. If you are building a hive then wood is probably the easiest material to use.
- The hive can have a queen excluder between the brood box and honey supers.
- Usually there are 8 - 10 frames per hive body or honey super and these can also be made of wood or plastic.
- The foundation is made of wax and wires or plastic
* And lastly the bottom board which optionally can have an entrance reducer.
Building a bee hive is really not that difficult if you have the right plan and now you know what to look for.

Building a bee hive is easy if you have the right plan, check out the beehive plans on our website [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] - we have the right plan for you.
